So, in the continuing saga of @starkruzr vs. the NDN Group Think Leaders (We’ve always been at war with Eurasia!), I’ve decided to FJM the longest screed they wrote to him:
We’ve been collectively watching ND football for longer than 50 years.
There are 4 of you. That’s claiming that on average, you’ve watched ~12.5 years of football each. I’m 25 and I’ve watched CFB for at least that long.
Additionally, I’ve been reading novels for probably 20 years. That doesn’t qualify me as the next Steinbeck.
USC was not an “exception”. It’s the same pattern we’ve seen since Kelly arrived.
Losing while favored? Given the way ND fans bet, we’re almost always favored so that proves nothing.
We’ve also won games we were favored in, lost games we were underdogs in and even won games we weren’t favored. It’s almost like we’ve been an inconsistent program for a number of years.
Plus losing games we expect to win? ND fans expect 12 wins every year so that’s always going to happen.
We did not beat any option teams “handily”.
Last year’s Army game just ran home crying and this year’s Air Force game just starting cutting itself.
Every team we’ve played with a mobile quarterback this season has caused us problems.
BJ Daniels vs ND: 18-30 (60%), 128 yards; 1 td; 12 car for 37 yard, 3.08 ypc
Clearly the reason for USF’s victory. Not the 5 turnovers by ND.
What Denard did to us had very little to do with his mobility and everything to do with our DB’s inability to turn around and find a football…and the fact that we had 4 turnovers at crucial moments.
The one team we beat that had one scored over 30 points, and had that team not been decimated by injuries on defense, it might have been a different game.
Not even sure this is English. My translation “If the one thing that occurred didn’t occur, things might have possibly been different!”
We lost to the other two mobile QB’s, USF and Michigan, two teams over which we have a definite talent advantage.
See above. Saying something a 2nd time doesn’t make it more correct
“Two consecutive winning regular seasons”. Standards such as that depress
us greatly.
It should. It depresses all of us. Welcome to the last 20+ years of ND football. Shockingly, the constant calling for coaches to be fired doesn’t bring stability to a program
This team is good enough to be undefeated right now, but for the second consecutive year, has lost to teams it should have beaten easily because of suspect personnel decisions and play-calling
So is Oklahoma who just lost to an inferior team. In fact, Bob Stoops teams have done that somewhat frequently. This may come as a shock to you, but going undefeated in CFB? Kinda hard to do.
Doing the samething and expecting a different result is not the definition of championship football.
Yet here we are and you’re once again calling for the firing of a coach after 1.5 seasons
”Weis would have lost Pitt”. Who cares? This team should have beaten a strictly mediocre Pitt team by more than three points. It has a lot more talent and (allegedly) more experienced coaching.
Yes they should have. But they played like shit and still managed a victory. That Pitt team is shit on offense but is an extremely strong defense. And we’re discounting close victories now? Keep moving that yardstick.
What happens next year when we lose Floyd and a host of other upperclass talent? Does Kelly get yet another mulligan? When does the excuse train stop?
That biggest reason the “excuses” even have to be discussed is because people like you react like 4 year olds after every loss and throw hissy fits.
Brian Kelly repeatedly eschews a balanced offense for a pass-happy attack that has not proven effective against top-flight defenses.
207 rushes, 275 passes. THAT’S THE WORST THING EVER.
Pre-SC it was a 45-55 run/pass split. Shockingly, when you fall down 14-0, after only 2 series, you throw the ball a ton to catch-up.
Also, what was the best defense we played this season? MSU
What was the only game we ran more than passed? MSU
His teams are soft on both sides of the ball, unable to establish any kind of control over the line of scrimmage and depending on trickeration and the breaks going their way. Both of those things can be proven true over his entire D1 coaching career.
“You guys are fucking dinosaurs who have no concept of the current football landscape. You are getting marginalized within the fanbase. You are relics to an olden time of football that doesn’t exist anymore.” See, I too can make generalized statements without any facts to back it up. But mine are true.
But seriously, how many trick plays have we even run this year? And relying on breaks going our way? Name 1 victory in which the only reason we won was the breaks going our way. SC? If you think breaks are the sole reason we won that game, you’re just being obtuse.
He repeatedly defends his inexperienced-at-championship-level coaches, preferring to throw hard-working players under the bus.
L-O-L I forgot this is ND where everything that goes right is cause of the players and everything that goes wrong is on the coaches.
He has done absolutely nothing to remedy these things or otherwise indicate he realizes coaching at the ND level is different than anything he’s had to do before.
In BK’s defense, he probably assumed a school with as good an academic reputation ND would have a smarter fan base that would understand the current situation the program is in.
Anyway, BK has repeated stated he realizes that ND is different. You can’t use gimmicks, you need to run the ball and play good Defense to win at ND and at this level of football. He’s
But yeah, he’s done nothing to address that fact.
Yes, recruiting has done well, but it should be noted that with the exception of Tyrone Willingham, who chose not to try, every coach in ND’s history has recruited well. Weis recruited well. Davie recruited well. Gerry Faust recruited well — something some of us are old enough to remember.
OOOHHHH AGE BURN. Can’t recover from that.
We’ve been extremely patient and disciplined in the face of adversity for 20 years.
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I had no idea your website has faced such adversity while the football team has struggled. That must have been tough for you guys.
In response, our coach, who has yet to win anything of meaningful
substance,
Breaking! Stopping the 8 game losing streak to SC and winning our first game over ranked opponent since 2006 no longer meaningful or substantive
tells us to “get used to it” while he trots out sophomore quarterbacks in pressure-filled situations for no reason
Yes, using a change of pace mobile QB at the goal-line is clearly the worst decision ever.
and spends his time worrying about things like video screens and piped-in music.
……so you think BK was like “You know, I should really focus on USC but fuck it! let’s get some music playing!”
Brian Kelly has changed absolutely nothing about his approach, and our extensive experience watching ND football has shown us that approach isn’t going to work.
I always expected people with 20+ years of experience to entirely change how they approach their job after a couple of set backs too.
That’s evidence.
Nope, that’s all opinion.
I have to admit, this was pretty fun.
